- Chimamanda Adichie reveals the real reason she became a feminist
- The famous Nigerian author and feminist has urged women to support each other genuinely as she confirms they need to fight societal pressures in one accord
Popular Nigerian author and feminist, Chimamanda Adichie has cleared the air on the real reasons she became a feminist in a new interview. According to her, she never had the intention of being a feminist but seeing how women were regularly oppressed in society inspired her to take the path she took. She further criticized the pressure her society imposes on women who marry late, don’t have children, or walk out of abusive relationships or marriages.
She revealed all of these in an interview she had with WIMBIZ today, Friday, November 4. Her words, “I did not set out to be a feminist icon, but I cannot stand the way women are being abused in the society and I feel like I have a platform that can make a difference no matter how little. A woman gathers the courage to leave an abusive marriage, and instead of being comforted and cared for, she’s being oppressed and insulted, even by fellow women. We need to change the narrative.
People don’t need to like you for the stand you take, all that matters is that you can sleep well at night, knowing that you have done and have said the right thing.”
